From the period of Jan to June 2015, a total case of accidents related to drink driving had been 81 but this year it dropped to 70 and fatalities has dipped from 8 to 3 although the number of injuries have rose from 102-109. From the number of 1,267 arrested for drink driving last year, this year it had dipped to 1,042.
According to Traffic Police Singapore, head of operations Ho Yenn Dar: “There has been a continued decrease in the numbers due to the traffic police’s three-pronged approach towards drink-driving – education, engagement and enforcement. People are more responsible now.” Not only that, with Uber, Grab and many other options to get you home safely after a big night out was also another reason that people do not risk the danger of drink driving.
Motorists are also aware of the heavy penalties on drink driving and do not wish to risk it all just for one night of drinking.
Enforcements
Better Equipments
The authorities have been carrying out regular operations to nab the offenders as well. The mobile breath evident analyser test centre was rolled out in April last year, it shortened the time required for an accurate test results. For these mobile breathalysers, it is important to know that even if you are within the drinking limits, TP is still able to arrest you for drink driving especially if you are not able to handle the vehicle yourself.
More larger scale operations
Regular large scale operations have been carried out to ensure that drivers abide by the rules. This is especially so at the more popular drinking locations.
With such enforcement especially during the weekends and public holidays and eve of the public holidays. More drivers are aware that they need to keep alert on these kind of festive seasons and chose to be extra careful to make special arrangements for drinking.
During the operations, drivers who do not pass an initial test and indicates that they have taken alcohol, will be ushered to a desk to blow the handheld breath analyser. If they fail this round, they will be taken to the mobile test centre for a more accurate reading.
