Earlier on we had shared about the Traffic Police new “tuned” down look of black outfit.  It seems to be working out well on road safety.  The One month old ” Batman” look with stealth bike team has been clamping down the road offenders especially “notorious” motorists, unaware.  In a month, 700 more violations were spotted and summoned.  Common offence were the following, and bear in mind, punishments have met to become harsher now.

1. Dangerous and Reckless Riding

We discussed this in the previous post and here it is being reviewed again.  This rule almost covers anything under the sun.  As long as you are dangerous and causing troubles to other road users.  YOU CAN KENA this!Illegal U turns, going against the traffic, pulling up in the middle of the road with no reason, road hogging … you name it.  As long as you are doing potential harm to other users , you can be charged in this rule.  The rule can also be combined with other rules together as a second charge etc.  For example:

If the motorist is on the road speeding and driving in a zig zag manner then the TP is able to charge the motorist 2 counts of charge.  1st : Speeding and 2nd: Dangerous and reckless driving.  This sounds like a bonus addition for most.  This rule is very hard to be mitigated or compressed is you are really guilty.

Penalty:  First offence incurs a fine of up to $3,000 or imprisonment of up to 12 months or BOTH! Repeat offender will incur a fine of up to $5,000 or imprisonment of up to 2 years or BOTH!

Depending on the severity of issue.  Seems like now, this rule does not just carry demerit points that easily.

2. Driving while using the  mobile phone

WELL this one has been discussed before but many people are still guilty of breaking this law.  As long as the mobile is in your hands or you are being spotted to be distracted by the usage of an electronic device, you can be charged.  Nowadays , the charges are harsher also as more more people use the roads as a form or earning money eg: Delivery man ( deliveroo, food delivery services, goods delivery services, Uber drivers).  As most of the motorists might not be full timers, they tend to rely on their Google maps etc.  while driving or riding, this is where the problem comes in.  You can lose your concentration and cause an accident.  DO NOT ASSUME that you are some experienced motorist of 15-30 years driving experience, it just take one mistake and you will regret it for live.  I always feel that the TP slogan of Making it home safe for your loved ones, very very important and very real also.

DO NOT THINK THIS IS A SMALL MATTER.  Even if you made it through.  The penalty now:

1st time offender: FINE:(up to) $1,000. IMPRISONMENT :(up to )6 months OR BOTH.

Repeaters:  FINE (upto ) $2,000. IMPRISONMENT:(up to ) 12 months OR BOTH.

Get this.  If your case is very very serious, you might even be faced with deviations. Which means fine or imprisonment MORE than the penalty recommended.  ULTIMATELY, the judge will have the power and the say.  But of course, this will need to go through the court.  The going back and forth, in and out of court, is REALLY NOT WORTH.  Imagine all these could be saved if you just concentrate on driving on the roads for like just an hour.

 
3. SPEEDING
So you think speeding is a small matter, maybe just speed that 5 km and I stop, it will be okay. Get this, SPEEDING warrants a fine of up to $200, and up to 24 Demerit points which means, you can kiss your licence good bye for a year. For that 5 minutes of using the phone, you could have saved yourself all these hassle. Please think about it.

With the new stealth bikes, motorists will have to be more vigilant and careful on the roads. TP statistics showed that in 2015, 4,875 motorcyclists and pillion riders were injured and this is a 5% rise from the stats in 2014. This group also accounted for almost half of the road deaths last year which is 72 out of 152.

Just within the 1st month of the new outfit and out look, TP has managed to subdue about 700 violations. This shows its effectiveness in keeping our roads safe.
