Ong Tze Boon case on running red light

Read about the article on ST about Singapore Architect Mr Ong Tze Boon, who is also the younger son of the late Singapore president , Mr Ong Teng Cheong. He is also the current president of the Singapore Institute of Architects. In April 2014, Mr Ong drove at the junction of River Valley Road and Hoot Kiam Road and did not heed the red light signal, thereby causing a collision with a taxi. The collision has caused the taxi driver to be slightly injured and he sough medical attention by himself, which amounted to 3 days Medical Leave.

Mr Ong was given a fine of $800, however, the district judge Carol Ling felt that simply a fine will not have any effect on the motorist who committed the offence. The court is able to give a verdict of up to SG$ 1,000 and possibility of suspension of licence for a period of time. Most motorists are afraid of having their licence suspended and having to go through inconvenience and hassle of travelling without a car.

Mr Ong went on to appeal for this case for the 3 months suspension to be acquitted. Judge Carol Ling cited that in the past most motorists are afraid of losing their licence to drive than having a fine. ” Beating the red light is a non-excusable conduct by any motorists regardless of the reason.”said the judge.

Lesson Learnt
In the court, it does not matter if you are a prominent figure, anyone who had committed an offence will be subjected to the same treatment in Singapore. This is all thanks to our just Law system here. Do note that most of the offence treatment is subjected to the judge’s discretion. Some of our judge can be harsher than others. If you have never been to the court before, do note that it is not a laughing matter when inside there. Sometimes the helplessness that you face dealing with the court can be very emotionally draining and stressful. Therefore, drive safe. The car is a weapon to kill.
