Tougher Penalties for Flouting Traffic Regulations

PMD1

Flout means to openly disregard.  The more common types in Singapore are illegally modifying the vehicle, driving recklessly or having illegal races on the streets.    The bill for Road Traffic Act to increase the punishment for the “flouters” have been passed.  Some of the more prominent severity are as follow:

  • Alteration of the vehicle illegally: Fine of up to S$5,000 and jail term till three months or both.  Currently, the Max Fine is only S$2,000. Repeat offenders will face the fine up to S$10,000 and jail sentence till 6 months or both.  This is the double of the current standard of only S$5,000.
  • DO take note that users of Personal Mobility Devices also face the same severity should they be found altering their devices illegally with extra parts.
  • DANGEROUS and RECKLESS Driving:  This could be due to the recent cases of cars driving against the traffic and causing unecessary injury and harm to the other users.  Change in the act has increased the fine from S$3,000 to S$5,000.  If not a fine, the jail sentence is up to 2 years or both.  Repeat offenders will also face almost a double of fine of up to S$10,000.
  • Punishment will be also set for offenders who park their vehicles in a way that can cause danger , obstruction or undue inconvenience to other road users.  First time offender will be faced with a fine of S$2,000 and jail term of up to 3 months while second time offender will face fine of S$5,000 and jail term of up to 6 months.

With the new “upgrades”, motorists and also personal Mobility Device users will have to be more careful when using the roads.
