Jailed for Fatal Accident in Singapore

News out on 13 Oct 2017 on Straits Times, another fatal drunk driving accident.    29 Year old business man Raymond Chiang Zhi Hao , was jailed ofr 4 months and Fined $4,000.  On top of that a ban for driving for 8 years.  He pleaded guilty for causing the fatal accident due to his negligence and drink driving.

THE STORY

This fatal accident had caused the driver of a taxi to die after his taxi was rammed Mr Chiang,  the taxi was stationary at the point of accident.  The taxi, driven by Mr Sim Beng Guan, 59, had stopped in between the leftmost and centre lane of the three-lane Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) after a minor accident with a lorry at 2.26am on March 18 last year.  They were trying to reconcile the accident.  As Mr Sim waited outside his taxi, about 15 minutes later, Mr Chiang’s car rammed past and hit the rear right of the cab.  The taxi spun to its nearside and ended up on the road shoulder.

Although he was transferred to the Parkway East Hospital for Rehabilitation.  Mr Sim died on Nov 22 and was bed bound and unable to talk after the accident.

 

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hairul Hakkim said that subsequent investigations showed that Chiang was found to have bloodshot eyes, a flushed face, a slightly unsteady gait and smelt of alcohol.  His blood sample was found to contain 154mg of ethanol per 100ml of blood, which exceeded the prescribed limit of 80mg/100ml, even though he claimed having drinking only 2 glasses of wine.    Mr Chiang has previous criminal records and was caught for drink driving in 2010.  For this accident, he could have been jailed for up to 2 years and fined up to $10,000.

 

Lesson Learnt

This accident should be avoided if not for the drinking, drink driving is a serious offence in Singapore as it can cause death to other road users.   Even though it is just 2 glasses of wine, we should not overlook that everyone’s body and effect is different.
